Hero is a word that may often be overused. Some people are heroic and may never really get credit for being so. Police Officers, Fire fighters, and EMS are often under-appreciated and not always considered heroes every day, but they really are. Heroes comes in all shapes and sizes, and it is really nice when they get the credit they deserve In my research on Dale Mabry Field I found out that the field was named in honor of a Tallahassee native Army Captain Dale Mabry who was killed on February 21, 1922 while commanding the Army semi-rigid airship Roma and crashed at Norfolk Virginia. Then in November 1929, the city of Tallahassee celebrated the grand opening of Dale Mabry Field. Dale Mabry field is a former airport that was replaced by Tallahassee Regional Airport and the land is now the campus of Tallahassee Community College which was redeveloped in the 1960s. The airport that is now located at 3300 Capital Circle SW, Tallahassee, Florida , now The Tallahassee Regional Airport open in 1961, was once located on Apple yard Drive and West Pensacola Street. In honor of the deceased Tallahassee native Army Captain Dale Mabry the city purchased the property from the Revel Brothers which was a Dairy Farm and named it Dale Mabry Field.
This field was the city’s first municipal airport. Then in 1941 Dale Mabry Field was used as an army base where the military officers and the enlisted men trained and got to know each other onsite. Dale Mabry field was such a popular field for the military soldiers that the Chinese and the French troops came to the base to complete their training. Some of this land was sold to Florida State College for Women (FSCW) so that the war veterans of WWII would have a place to father their education.About 500 of the veterans attended the College. Mabry fought in WWI and died before WWII began.
As I Continue to do research on this brilliant man Dale Mabry, I also find out that he’s the son of the former Florida Supreme Court Justice Milton H. Mabry and Ella Dale Barmlet. On “this website” there are some terrific photos of the naval planes in flight during the grand opening of Dale Mabry Field in Tallahassee 1929, a portrait of Captain Dale Mabry, pictures of the open house at the Dale Mabry Field in Tallahassee 1945, African American troop activities 1943 and Florida State College for Women students in civil aeronautics class in 1940. I also found the original WWII Tuskegee Airmen photo on Dale Mabry Field and on the back of the picture is a stamp “Official Photograph Air Corps”.
During WWII more people died in that war than in any war in history and it didn’t end until the defeat of Germany and Japan in 1945. Not only did more people died in WWII, it was the most expensive war, damaged more property and caused more changes than any war in history.
There’s a Dale Mabry Campus in Hillsborough County located on Tampa Bay Blvd. Dale Mabry was very well known man and loved by many.
I didn’t know anything about a Dale Mabry Field but I am glad I was given this assignment because I have really learned a lot about Dale Mabry Field and to say I will continue to research this man to learn more. I am ending my research for now on this note one such hero is a hometown legend, and that man’s name is DALE MABRY.
When the research on Dale Mabry Field started I went to Google website and started with Wikipedia remembering the instructions given by Dr. Soldani. My search continued by going to the learning commons and asking for assistance, we couldn’t find anything in the library data base so then I started going to different website and information surfaced and that is how I obtain my research information.
