Service Project: Every time I step on the field it is a blessing

(Student Essay Fall 2015  Note: student is a college baseball player)

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi.

For my service project, I read the book “The Prayer of the Laughing Yoga Frog” and sent box of miscellaneous candies and cookies to a boy named Alex Lehr.

Alex is a boy who has a physical condition that limits him tremendously. He can’t do many things by himself, so it made me feel good to be able to help him, even if it’s something small like sending him some simple food. People have taken advantage of him before, and it makes me feel good to be able to help him.

He can’t shop for himself, so I would like to think that I helped him. This service project has helped me be thankful for the ability to play baseball. I am able to go to college for free to play baseball while there are people in the world like Alex who can’t even move fully by themselves. I take my abilities for granted way too often, and this project has helped me realize this.

Every time I step on the field is a blessing, and I should be more grateful for God giving me this blessing.

Alex has been through so much in life, yet he still seems to remain positive and that is really inspiring. My biggest worry is striking out while he has to fight for his life.

I am glad that I did this service project because it has opened my eyes that there are people who have it way worse than I do, and I should be appreciative for all of the blessings God has put into my life. From now on when something does not go my way, I will always remember that I have it easy compared to a lot of people.
