(Student Essay Fall 2015)
“Try not to become a person of success rather become a person of value.” –Albert Einstein. This quote means to me, don’t be a person that is just doing what is told just to get a good grade out of that something. But be a person that will make a difference in something in the community or in someone’s life. For this service project It really made me feel a great amount of pride and joy to be able to make a difference in someone else’s life.
The point of this project was to create a gift of goods that you will pass on to a veteran at Veterans Village. For me, I really wanted to go far beyond the expectations as far as giving. While I was at Walmart shopping for goods I wanted to get goods that will really make James (the Veteran I was assigned) feel worthy and things he can use every day for a long time. So the goods I got James was, (two long sleeve shirts, two sweat pants, a pair of gloves, ten pair of sox, a grooming box, towels, wash clothes, plus a $20-dollar gift card to Walmart and a $10-dollar gift card to McDonalds as well). I really wanted to give James a box of goods that he will remember for a long time. I also kept in mind that James was also a United States Veteran that served for our country, which he should get a good amount of goodies for his act of service he displayed in the war. I’m really happy that I could be a part of this project and I’m joyed I could make a difference for James when he receives his gift on Christmas.
As being president of my Interact Club back in high school I knew I wanted to go far beyond the normal giving amount when doing this project. Back in high school our club was a part of Shoe Boxes for Haiti. Which I’ve participated every year since middle school and I’m happy I could be able to be a part of giving a gift to a worthy veteran. The act of giving, just makes you feel a sense of pride and value in your life. As being a Christian I always wanted to give to the ones that don’t have that much of anything. A couple of Bible quotes that meant the most to me about giving is Isaiah 43:7 “The purpose of Christian giving is the same as the purpose of Christian living. We were created for the glory of God”. The other Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:31 “We are to do all for the glory for God”. The point of giving to me, is to show the glory of God and how he died for our sins. I’m happy to say I am a Christian and there’s not a better feeling then making a difference in someone’s life that doesn’t have that much.
