John's Report

The quote I decided to use for the opening of this essay is by Mahatma Gandhi, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This quote spoke to me because I truly feel like to find fulfillment in ones life you should put others needs before your own, and what better way to help others then by providing meals for five days for veterans that have given so much for others. For the service project I decided to provide the five meals for five days for the veterans at veterans village. This wasn't the first time I have had a class where the teacher was very passionate about helping veterans at veterans village, as someone who has served in the military and who feels like they hadn’t given enough I was more than happy to help out others who aren’t able to help themselves. I wanted to do this project because it was taking place around the time of thanksgiving and I feel like that time is very crucial for the people who have been forsaken by most and I just really wanted to help them out in the best way that I can.

The impact that this had on me was that I received a great deal of personal fulfillment and even after I had turned in the bags of food I sat down with my instructor and spoke with her for about an hour and when we talked I was really given a personal insight into why she does what she does when it comes to these projects to help out veterans. At the beginning I was a little unsure about wanting to teach after I have graduated from TCC and FSU, but after doing this service project in order to help others I was reinvigorated about my desire to teach high school after graduation. It was the act of helping others that helped me realize that what I wanted to do for sure was to teach the next generation and prepare for the challenges after school ends. I can only hope that my actions during this service project have helped others realize the importance of helping others without having any selfish desires. I know that I had not written a lot during this short essay, but I have shared all that I can about what I did for the service project and I hope that it will be enough for a portion of a grade. I enjoyed providing all that I could for the project and I can only hope that in the future I have teachers that have the same desires to help veterans who have given so much that others wouldn't give.
