As I grow I realize that helping others really can make you feel better about yourself and they really appreciate you and everything that you do for them. Some may take it for granted but those are the kind of people who are not thankful and don’t realize what you are doing for them and how much you’re helping them out. Helping others can really have a big impact on their life. I never would have thought going to a veteran’s dinner would make some of the men or even myself so happy. When I was there I was talking to the men and also observing my surroundings. The men there all just had the biggest smile on their face and were so grateful and thankful that we were there giving them food and just talking and acknowledging the fact what they went through was tough and we were grateful for everything they have accomplished.
For my service project I actually did two. The first service project I did, I went to the village and brought a fruit bowl and while I was there I stood at the door and greeted the veterans as they came and left. When I was as the village greeting the men every veteran had a smile on their face coming and leaving. I mean seeing three pretty girls at the door and telling them “I hope you have a good night” with a big smile. I’m sure just that there made their day a million times better. For my second service project I adopted a veteran for Christmas. When I adopted a veteran for Christmas I got to buy them a gift. I bought two towels, sheets, super soft pajama pants and long sleeve shirt, oh and Santa socks! I wont be there when they open the gift but I can only imagine that they will have a huge smile on their face knowing they get a special gift and someone is thinking of them and grateful for everything they have done. Smiling means a lot to me because it shows emotion and how happy you are.
Doing these service projects made me feel special in every type of way because helping and giving theses veterans who fought for us in the war who could have died and being able to see them and tell them thank you for everything they have done means a lot to me and I’m sure it means a lot to them. Seeing other people being so kind and thoughtful and wanting to do something for them it such a blessing. People don’t realize that doing something so small just saying hello thank you can make someone feel so loved. Helping others can make the world a better place. Everyone knows we need more kindness in this world. I know that some people are super grateful when others help them, like the veterans they are grateful that people want to help them and give them things. I’m glad I got to be apart of such an amazing project and hopefully help and change the way some of the men think. Just by being there a day.
