It
takes a strong person to understand that we are all one, we all go through good
and tough times, we all portray the same emotions, so we can all understand how
it feels to be down and out and choose to be there for others in those moments.
This year I was inspired on thanksgiving, with a few of my peers, to bring the
joys of thanksgiving to the veterans of Veterans Village. I was nervous about
going at first because of my shyness, I even sat in the car for the first 5
minutes confused on where I was, but I was soon warmed by the smiling faces
that greeted me. I first met up with a couple classmates I never got a chance
of speaking with during class while we took food and set up the kitchen area.
There was such large variety of food that was brought from turkey and stuffing
to an assortment of pies. I could tell the veterans were anxious to get them a
couple plates. As for my professor, there was never a dull moment with her.
After all the plates were serve I mingled with a couple of the vets hearing
some of their stories. In all it was a really great experience to have and now
I’m looking forward to next year. I want to be more involved in the community
because that’s what I believe in. I believe we can all be there for each other
even if it’s just letting someone know that somebody cares. We might not
understand that we create our own problems for others to deal with, we create
each other’s stress, and all it takes to break the chain is to give back to the
community. Not just once a year or once a month but making a sound contribute
that helps fix the problem instead of just babying the symptoms. I one day hope
to get my PhD in philosophy and bring more of a community consciousness to the
world. There are already civilizations around the world now that have active
communities to were normal social differences like social classes or
stereotypes don’t exist. We as humans are social creatures and our union of
communities is what makes up humanity itself. I believe people should volunteer
more often, not to just say they did it but to truly help and make a change.
Lately for me, life has been superficial lately, everybody acts the same like
people are afraid of just being themselves but having this experience help me
move on from those thoughts. I see how much of a difference can be made from a
simple deed and how that can change someone’s life. This year has been a
informational year for me, not just because I’m in school but truly learning
about our history, what our country has been through and how we got to this day
and age. We have made some great advances throughout the years with aiding ones
who are unfortunate to help themselves but the biggest problem I think we face
is we put the burden on our government or other organizations to bring comfort
to others and think sending money can help fix every problem. Money helps one
get resources to live and survive, a person bring you them supplies themselves
brings comfort, human connection is something we all need.
