For
this service project, I chose the victory mail project. This involved sending a
“care package” to a soldier in Afghanistan. I started off this project by
making a list of things that would be practical for our soldier, and something
that they would enjoy. I then went to my local Publix and purchased several of
these items and placed them in a box along with a handwritten note in which I
thanked the anonymous soldier for their service, and for the tremendous
sacrifice they make defending our freedom. After sealing the package, I took it
to the post office, and off it went to Afghanistan.
I
have always been a person who has wanted to lend a helping hand, or assist
others in any way possible. I found that this project fit perfectly with my
beliefs because it allowed to me to help a person who has helped me in ways
that I could never possibly repay them for. I figured that although this isn’t
much, it will definitely put a smile on their face, and let them know that we
are thinking about them back home.
I
think this project had quite the large impact on the soldier that I sent it to
because it is a small token of appreciation. In today’s society, people aren’t
as appreciative or thoughtful compared to prior years. There is so much going
on, and in the hustle and bustle of our very busy lives, we tend to forget
about certain things and people, especially our troops overseas. With that
being said, it is very important that we step back sometimes, and reflect on
the sacrifices that people make for us in our lives, and we should try to express
gratitude more often towards that person.
