AMH2020 student*
Walt Disney once said, “if you can
dream it, you can do it;” my dream for the longest time has been to improve
others’ lives in any way possible and this semester I was able to accomplish
just that here in Tallahassee. Throughout middle and high school, I would
volunteer at multiple organizations, with my church and family, that helped the
less fortunate and I never expected it to make much a big impact on my life and
heart. So, when I was given the opportunity to go to Veterans Village, to serve
those who have served my country, I jumped right on it without hesitation.
I
feel as if I was being called to this project, to bring warmth to these
individuals who have served our country and make their days better by reminding
them how much people, like me, appreciate all they have done to defend our
country.
At Veterans Village, I was able to
do what I love to do, cook. I prepared a Tater Tot casserole, which was
something new, along with salad, and Macaroni and Cheese. Small and simple at
home kind of feeling meals. Though this may seem like a simple act, I believe
you can make a huge difference in some one’s life with small actions; and to
see how overly grateful these men and women were for just a few college students
taking a little time out of their day to help them out with one meal touched my
heart.
With a passion for helping those
around me, this project was not just another grade in the grade book but gave
me as much joy as it did the Veterans. I have now seen my potential, being that
I do not have to limit myself to my usual Christmas drive with my family but
here in Tallahassee I can help people myself and spread the love and joy that
life provides to many people around me. I know every semester when students
come it does not just make an impact on those being served but the ones serving
themselves. That warm happy feeling inside, to give, makes my day so much
better.
I could not be more thankful for
being given this opportunity and even though I may not have you as a professor
anymore would love to join you and other students at more events yet to come.
