While I was growing up I was a very involved with Girl Scouts. I have received my bronze and silver award. Since I dropped out of it I haven’t been really involved with the community. While attending this class I had never heard about the Veterans Villages. I did decide to make that my service project because it was something I have never done before.
I was lucky enough to be apart of one of their Breakfast for Dinner back in October. I was looking forward to meeting the people, cooking for them, and having them appreciate it. Sadly, I didn’t get to make conversation with the men and women because I was in the kitchen making pancakes. I did enjoy listening to the veterans talk about there day and sometimes a couple of them talked about the wars but it was not in much detail, plus they were just proceeding along down the food line.
Since I knew that would not be enough I wrote 5 letters to one of the veterans in hope that it will bring a smile to there face and know someone is thinking about them, especially this close to the holidays. Speaking of the holidays I did decided to sponsor a veteran. I was never given a name though. I have never felt so good in my life going to Wal-Mart and being someone actual Christmas. I bought two large body towels, one wash clothes, one face towel, a bath mat, a digital fm/am radio alarm clock, and a reusable water bottle.
I really hope they enjoy the gifts as much as I enjoyed getting them. Which I’m sure they will. I feel this is going to make a major impact on someone because they know that there is hope and life isn’t as bad as they feel. Having that little bit of hope can go a very long way and even make a life change. I believe this is such a great idea to have in a class because many college students are not involved in the community, when they should be. Life isn’t just about partying, but it is about giving back to people that don’t have it as good as you.
