Maya Angelou once said, “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. This is exactly why I feel you should give back to the community. If I can make someone’s day by just giving a little bit of my time, it is totally worth it. The joy I get in giving something will ultimately be returned with either excitement and happiness. I participated in the Holiday Gift Box service project for this very reason. I wanted others to feel the happiness that I have during Christmas with my family with their very own.
My holiday gift box adventure would start with a visit to Walmart with my mother. Here, my mother and I found pajamas and bath towels. The pajamas were the traditional fashion (a striped button-up) while the towels were a solid beautiful blue. While I saw other items I liked, my mother just wanted to get these items as they were 100% cotton. She claimed that they were more comfortable that way, so I just went with it. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the sheets at an affordable price so we went to Bealls. Fortunately for me, the sheets were at an affordable price and to my mother’s likening, 100% cotton. If people like 100% cotton as much as mother does, hopefully the people who’ll receive them will appreciate our search.
This adventure has impacted my educational path by making me more aware that people in my community need help. I had previously volunteered at Wakulla Springs but not in community events taking place in Tallahassee. The people in Wakulla Springs rely on resident volunteers for community projects but that isn’t really a ‘thing’ in the city. After this, I will look for more events that I can participate in to help my fellow peers. Just a little bit of help can go a long way to make sure a problem is done quickly and more enjoyable.
