“We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, and more
laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that”.
-
Ellen DeGeneres
I love this quote by Ellen so
much. She speaks nothing but truth in the quote she gave. There is so much
wrong doing in the world and we as a society have gotten used to it. If CNN
were to report a shooting in a shopping mall right now, most people wouldn’t even
bat an eye. Most wouldn’t even be shocked. Crime and unreasonable violence
happens so much it has become the new normal. We forget about there actually
being good people in the world we live in. Even I myself forgot that there were
still good people in the world. That was until I did this service project.
For my service product, I decided to do
something for the soldiers that protect this country. I sent a box to
Afghanistan for my professor’s previous classmate. When he was in my
professor’s class, they sent care packages to soldiers. Now he is a soldier
himself, and my class is sending care packages to him and his platoon. I
decided to send him a package full of American snacks that you might not get in
Afghanistan. I also sent him a card to let him know that despite all the bad
things that are happening in the world, they are not forgotten.
By sending this box I realized
that in no way shape or form did this act of kindness match with my core value
or major. My core value was honesty and my major is information technology. I
honestly don’t know how my choosing of my service product is related to my core
values. I feel as if, just like Ellen, I wanted to contribute to spreading
happiness and joy. There is nothing wrong with making someone else’s day. In
fact by me doing this I felt 10 times better about myself. I had for gotten
what it felt like to contribute something to someone in a positive way. This
project was really an eye opening experience for me.
I hope that I sent joy to these
soldiers’ hearts. I think by sending care packages to soldiers, we show them
that we care and are thankful for their brave sacrifices. In my opinion, this
act a kindness should be advertised more rather than commercials about the latest
electronics. I think this not only benefits the soldiers, but the people
sending the packages as well. It helps to develop relationships for one and
second, who isn’t going to feel good about themselves when they do this. As for
my school, I hope more people catch on to Dr. Soldani project. I think it
should be advertised around the school and there should be a collection box for
it on campus. This would definitely be a non-stressful activity for students to
get involved in.
