AMH2020
“I've
learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did,
but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - .” This is a quote by Maya Angelou. For my
service project in AMH 2020 I decided to go with the second shipment of the
Afghanistan boxes. I procrastinated my service project up until the last week
of needing to send it out and compiled what I needed to place into the box on
my one day off which was ironically on veterans day. Love was my core value when our class did the core value in class
participation activity. There are so many ways that this project influences my
core value.
I went to Lucky's market and bought some deodorant
wipes that I thought would be helpful if the veterans just wanted a quick
refreshing wipe to get rid of any odors. That was the only thing that I bought
from Lucky's. I proceeded to the dollar general where I bought a large pack of Kleenex,
some cough drops, as well as some large thick sox. I'm sure they have a medic
tent to give them things when they are sick but I figured unwrapping it in a
box would feel more homie. I also got containers of q-tips as well as baby
wipes while I was there as well.
On Veterans Day I also made a
trip to Wal-Mart where I purchased protein packed granola bars to help the Men
start their day. I also bought plenty of hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes,
toothpaste, and dental floss. I got them the crest 3d whitening toothpaste
because I feel like it leaves me with the cleanest feeling. I also bought them
compact washcloths that expand when water is applied Most of them had Spiderman
on them they may seem a little childish but it's something that's different and
fun and I hope they like it. Got multiple lufas as well for the men to pick and
choose from along with bars of soap and deodorant. I got lotion and Chap Stick
as well. The final item I got for this box was a multi colored pack of pens
along with a note pad.
Once
I figured out that this box was going to be my service project I spent time
researching on what and how to go about creating the box. I read that if you
were going to be shipping food items overseas it is best to bag up the goods in
a baggie so the food doesn't taste like any of the other items you placed in
the box such as soap. Upon my research I also found that the United States
Postal office also provides military care packages free of charge which include
7 boxes a roll of tape and all of the necessary forms for the box to be able to
ship at a standard rate of twelve dollars.
Upon
the due dates arrival I grew more and more nervous as to what I would get for the
solders risking their lives. I took more of a hygnic rout, after words I felt
like a mother telling a child not to forget brushing their teeth. I really hope
they enjoy the box and the contents inside. This box influences my core value
because I thoughtfully created this box for the sole intention for another
human beings happiness. Isn't that what love is all about? Doing things for
others to make them happy, rather it's a gesture or a gift. I was able to, in
some small way, affect the life of another person that I don't even know in a
positive way. Doing this makes me personally feel go good inside. Maya Angelou's quote was rite, they may not remember what I did, or what
I said, but I know that my box along with everyone else who sent the October
and November boxes has affected their lives greatly and made them feel a sense
of warmth, love, and home.
Creating
this box relates to my major in the sole fact that it took time, effort, and
creativity just like it takes all of these skills to create a new piece of art.
And in the end I was able to create
something beautiful that will last, and be enjoyed by many. I strive to make my
art make a person feel some sort of emotion rather it’s a negative or a
positive emotion, it just depends on the piece and with this box I hope I have
created a warm sense of home to spread throughout the community.
