B: I just want to make as big of an impact as I can.

AMH 2020
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
The service project I did this semester was going to the veteran’s home and serving a meal to them. It was honestly a remarkable experience. I made huge plate of brownies and brought those and then stood outside and met and talked to some of the residents and my classmates. (I don’t have the group photo from the service project but I love that picture we all took.) That quote by Gandhi is probably one of my all-time favorite quotes, I just believe it is so true because whenever I am serving people I honestly feel that I’m doing something in the world that is good and positive. This is how I felt when I was doing my service project and I wish I would’ve done two of them because of how great it was.
I believe it connects to my core values because since I was young, my parents have always taught me to serve others before yourself. Also, I’m am a Christian so I try to just live my everyday life this. Whether it’s just serving my friends or parents or a stranger, it’s just such an important part of my life and what I believe in. When I was in middle school and throughout high school my mom started a food drive at our church called, “Our Father’s Storehouse.” She said God came to her in a dream and told her to start this organization at our church. I volunteered at it two times a month for years giving out food and clothes, and other necessities that people who came needed. It was an eye opening experience as a twelve year old, meeting and talking to them and seeing what the real world was like for some people. It was also very cool to form bonds with people who came regularly and talk to them to see how their day was going and stuff. My mom eventually stepped down as the leader of it and weren’t as active in it after that but still helped from time to time at our church. It was a such a cool experience and definitely shaped my life for the better and I will be grateful for that.
Service is a very big part of my major. I am a political science major and I want to work for the government in some sort of way not really sure yet. But idealistically I would like to do a job in which my primary purpose is to serve others. Also, during my time in college I plan on volunteering and doing things around the community to help and get involved with local government and being active in the community. There is just so many ways that I can impact the community with my major and that is what I intend to do with my time in Tallahassee. I want to live my life constantly with an attitude of service towards everyone. It’s just what I believe in and what will shape my life as I continue on. And if everyone lived their life with a mentality of service then we would live in a much better world for many reasons.
I hope I can make an enormous impact in this city through service. I have lived in Tallahassee my entire life and I plan to stay here forever cause I love it here. Tallahassee is all I’ve ever known really and I can’t imagine another place being home. Anything I can do to make this city better I will do in the future. My hope in the next few years is to get involved with the big brother program in the big bend area. One of my friends who is a senior at FSU is currently involved with it and has a big brother program and I’ve hung out with him and his little brother and it looks so rewarding and looks like so much fun too. Also, growing up as the youngest in my family with 2 older sisters and an older brother, I have never really had the opportunity to be someone’s big brother. Doing this for a child who really needs a positive influence in their life would be so great on so many levels. It would be so rewarding and fun to mentor a child as they grow up and be there for them when they need you. And provide anything for them that they don’t have access to, or to help them in school or just in life in general.

Looking back on this semester, being my first semester of college I have learned so much about myself and what I want to do with my life. I’ve probably learned more about myself this semester than I ever did in high school or in past years. I’ve just matured so much that I finally realize how to be successful in school and the things that really matter in life. And studying for your tests was a difficult challenge because their essay tests but I’m better prepared because it now. I know college will effectively prepare me for this and I’m just so excited for what the future holds for me and what I can accomplish as life goes on. This service project is only the beginning of what I want to do. It has motivated me to want to change the community and I want to change Tallahassee for the better and make a huge impact and leave a lasting legacy. My goal is to leave the world a better place for my future kids than it was when I was a kid. And with all that is going on in the world right now and how messed up of a place it is, I just want to make as big of an impact as I can. And set an example for younger people and live life to the fullest each and every day and the best way that I can to serve others.
