If you had asked me a few years ago to go to the store and buy snacks
then send them off to someone else to eat I would not have been thrilled.
But
now that I am older I was so excited to have the opportunity to help someone
that is serving our country. For my service project, I choose to send a box to
our troops in Afghanistan. I filled it to the top with requested snack items
from the list and a personal note that I hope whoever gets the box enjoys
reading. I am glad I was able to send the troops some of their favorite snacks
that they do not get to eat often.
Doing this service project connected to my
core value of love because I was able to share my love to our men overseas even
though it was just through a box and a letter. It was about showing them how grateful
we are for what they are doing for our country and how much they are loved.
I
connect this to being an education major by helping someone. When I am a
teacher I will be able to help my students everyday by teaching them
academically and by helping them become the best version of themselves they can
be. Although sending a box does not have as huge of an impact on the troops
like I will have on my students, every little thing counts. When choosing a
service project, I knew this was the one I wanted to do because my grandma
would always tell stories of how she would send my grandpa letters and boxes
while he was in war. She would make care packages full of his favorite things
and food because they could hardly access anything. She would also send him letters
updating him on how things were going at home because he was deployed just
after my uncle was born.
My grandpa said receiving these things would remind
him of all the great things he had waiting for him at home. It would make his
day to think of something else besides war and to know he was being missed. I
hope this has a positive effect on the people around me.
I hope they are
inspired to help the men that risk their lives every day for us. Especially
around this time of the year it feels good to give back and make someone else’s
day.
It doesn’t have to be sending a box to a troop but I do hope people will
reach out and help someone no matter how big or small the gesture is. Using one
hand to help someone will not only make that person happy but it will bring you
happiness too.
