“When autumn darkness falls, what we will remember are the
small acts of kindness: a cake, a hug, an invitation to talk, and every single
rose. These are all expressions of a nation coming together and caring about
its people.” -Jens Stoltenberg
For
my first service project I donated a bunch of garlic bread and garlic butter
and handmade garlic bread for the residents at Veterans Village. I spent a
night off of work spending it with those who tend to be neglected in this
nation’s society. I spent it volunteering my time among students of my
community serving those who fought for our freedom and unfortunately who are
now struggling in life. I deeply enjoyed this humbling experience and being the
reason they smiled that night. The smiles on their face when they saw all that
garlic butter on that bread made me smile. I will admit that the veterans
village before I went I was iffy about, even though I knew I was blessed with
the gift of serving and making others happy, I was nervous due to the fact that
I took off work and spent 20 dollars on Garlic Bread, and money on an uber to
get there. But it was so incredibly worth it and when it only lasted 30
minutes, I was disappointed and wanted it to last longer.
The
quote above is perfect for both service projects I chose to do, because I
believe us as a nation lacks compassion for one another, especially when it
comes to showing compassion to those who fought for us to live in this country
filled with opportunities. It’s sad now a days that people believe they shouldn’t
praise veterans and troops due to the fact this country is filled with racism
and unfairness and inequality. This disgusts me as a citizen of America that my
fellow citizens choose to kneel during the national anthem while our troops are
walking through hills in Afghanistan that they choose to disrespect not only
the nation, but the men and women sacrificing their lives for us and who DID
serve this country. And they think that it’s justified because the oppression
they faced. Makes me LAUGH that this is their excuse! I am very passionate
about respecting our servicemen and it makes me happy that I could go and
volunteer thanking these men for their service and just being a friendly face
of the generation they helped make life easier for.
I
also chose to do a box for our servicemen in Afghanistan and give them a reason
to smile in such difficult times. I wanted to be the reason that they smile and
make them happy, and remind a solider in Afghanistan that they are fighting for
a nation where its citizens care. At least some of them do, especially me. The
process of buying items for the box was so fun. I strolled the isles like
Christmas and picked out things that “oh I hope they like this!” I believe it’s
important for a nation to lend some of their time and money to help those who
weren’t as blessed as others.
In
the line of work I am choosing to go into I hope to make a decent amount of
money. I plan on being a Criminal Defense Attorney, and not just plan on it, I
will become one. These volunteer opportunities you gave me made me want to
volunteer and in my future use a portion of my money and time volunteering for
the less fortunate, mainly the servicemen. It is the least I could do for them,
due to the fact that I would be a Defense Attorney due to their service.
Because they helped protect me and this country over the years.
I thank you for
being such a wonderful teacher and encouraging me and my classmates to take our
God given gifts, time and money and do something that will make us happy by making
others who need happiness, attention and love happy. Also I want to thank you
for being the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I have learned
more in your class in this one semester than I ever have in my 4 years in High
School. I also have never earned a grade in my life, I was handed everything
all of high school. And your class taught me how to study and earn something. I
earned that 100.25 in your class, and I can’t thank you enough. I have never
been more proud.“When autumn darkness falls, what we will remember are the
