“Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will
delineate and define you,” by Thomas Jefferson is a quote that perfectly
describes what the main objective for this project was. Students were assigned
to do a work of service that would benefit others especially the veterans. The
project was designed to give students a chance to do something for others out
of the kindness of their heart. We had the option of serving at the veteran’s
dinner, sending a care package to the troops overseas, buy daily necessities
for a holiday drive, or whatever we choose, as long as it is for other people
and there is no profit being earned. I decided to make a donation for the
holiday gift exchange.
It was a no brainer for me to make this donation to help others
because helping others always brings a smile to me. My favorite memories as a
kid was waking up on Christmas morning and running downstairs to be with my
family all day. We would exchange gifts, eat delicious food, and catch up with
one another. Being a much older young man now gives me the chance to go look at
all of the memories I have and how thankful I am. Being able to grow up in an
environment that I was able to be something I will never to for granted. For
me, the opportunity of giving back to the veterans and donating some daily
necessity items was a no-brainer. The thought of living without a towel,
slippers, or a blanket is unreal. I could never imagine the amount of stress
they have to go through with their post service life, family issues, and
financial issues. If I was in their shoes and had all of these issues going on,
I do not know how I would be able to live every day.
This connects to my values as a human being tremendously. Giving
back is what me and my family do all the time. As a person I am very humble,
willing and understanding and I think those three characteristics describe this
service project a ton. Being humble and doing a project for others out of the
kindness of your heart is very touching and I am sure the veterans who receive
my donations will love it. A person who is willing to do anything will always
be the person who takes the first step in the water and try new things. That
could be donating your time to others or just smiling at someone while holding
the door. Also, an understanding person is someone who looks at the overall big
picture in life and gets the idea of what they are doing and why they are doing
the service. This can relate to my major in many ways. For one thing Business
Marketing is about being able to communicate well with others and understand
things from other people’s point of view.
A service project can be much more than just helping others. A
service project can also help you and make yourself a better person. I know it
made me a better person because I was able to truly understand what actions
mean to others and how actions mean louder than words. The idea of this project
was not to have the college students pay for things that are not theirs and
have more assignments for their grade. The point of this project was for people
to open their eyes to the whole world and realize they are not the only one and
there are a lot more people struggling out there than you really think and
could use some support and attention.
