For my service project I decide to help Mr. D* with his
apartment. By giving him a microwave, some groceries, and entertainment system.
I also had an air mattress to give to him but I didn’t have an air pump and my
only solution was to wait until I could find one or somebody with one but by
the time it was too late. Somebody had already bless him with a bed.
This service
project connect with my core values, because from a child I was surround around
people who strongly believe that it was always better to give than receive, to
always look at the bigger picture and never judge a book by its cover with
putting yourself as a the main character in their story. And to others who need
it first. In the bible it also states that the first should be last and the
last should be first. So I grew with an open minded and always looking for ways
I can help people who were and need. Also, that when you doing something from
the heart and something that is genuine you don’t need a camera. Because if you’re
doing something for the camera/ social media don’t really mean it. By me
helping Mr. D just made me realize that things that embedded in me as
child are still there. Even though I may not be as finically stable as I want
to be as a college student. I could still lend a helping hand to someone who
needed it.
This service project connect with major in a way too. Currently my
major is Criminal Justice, to become and police officers. As a police officer
your job is to look out for others and protect them and always put others first.
But there are some officers that go help and beyond to help other and need. For
instance, Officer Tommy Norman he works a community that is pretty much poverty
label. So he started GofundMe account to help provide toys, snacks, etc. for
the kids in the area to help out. He didn’t look or except for nothing in
return he just did it out the kindness of his heart. That’s what I wanted to be
known for somebody who’s never looking for a hand out but somebody who is
always lending a hand out.
I believe my
service project would have an positive impact on someone who is pretty much so
much self-center that they have became too fact that there are some people out
here who is homeless. And haven’t eaten in days and sleeping on the side of the
road with nothing but in bag of trash and their sign that “says haven’t eating
in days, and May god bless you”. But rather complain about what they don’t have
instead of being thankful for what they do have. After walking into Mr. D apartment and seeing how he did have anything not even a microwave real touch
me and made me open my eyes. And made me realize that it could so much worst.
I’m not going to sit here and bash other people who are worry about themselves
like this is their world and everybody else is just taking up space by living
in it.
Like I once wasn’t that girl. By me being the last girl out my parent’s
kids. Everything was pretty much handed to me and I usually get my way
especially when I cry. I cried because my parents cook something I didn’t want
to eat. I use to complain about not having the new Jordan’s that came out and
always wanted to go shopping so I can have something new to wear when I went to
different events. Or not having a new car. Instead, of realizing that there are
so many people out here in the world. That can’t afford flip flops and are
wearing hand me downs that are three generations old. Let’s not forget that are
some people that have ride the bus for 2 or more hours just to be on time to
get to school or to work. But what I can is that this project humble me and
brought me back to how I was really brought in this world. Which is too put
others first.
For
the community, this project also made me realize how blind our community is to
the own people when they are in the need the most. We are so quick to help out
somebody in another country don’t get me wrong there is no such thing as too
much help or I’m not here to tell you who you should help out. But what about
that poor old man who you walk or drive pass everyday asking for a quarter or
fifth cents. But you just lock your doors and turn up your music like he
doesn’t even existence. Again don’t get wrong I understand sometimes you just
don’t have it be honest with yourself and do the right thing. Like I stated
including myself, there have been penalty of times that I have done this trick.
But soon as we see somebody in Africa, Haiti, or Puerto Rico we are quick to
reach into our pocket books. I cried because my parents cook something I didn’t
want to eat. After realizing that it made me appreciate of everything that I
have even if it’s a meal I don’t want. A wise man also once said, be the change
you want to see in the world. You can’t preach about people looking pass their
neighbor when you look pass the too. So when you see somebody and need and you
have help your neighbor out. Because you never know, but God forbid that could
you one day on the streets and you are wondering where your next meal is going
to come from.
