Praying with Bad Posture

(From 2007)

Until recently, I’ve seen praying as a ridiculously formal exercise.

CCD (Catholic Sunday School, I can’t tell you what it stands for because I think only the Pope knows) teachers taught us chants, lists, macabre stories of beheaded men.

The worst CCD teacher I ever had was the one who prepared me for Confirmation.

I was about 11, the age of rapid growth and expanding curves.

In my case, Cuban curves. Everywhere.

One Sunday I decided to wear an outfit of stretchy red pants and a striped red and brown shirt (hello, it was the 70s, I forgive myself).

The outfit was a bit too small. Definitely unflattering, too tight in certain places, short in others.

I remember thinking that it would be the last time I would wear it before passing it on to another family.
I didn't feel a great desire to dress up for church or CCD.
Confirmation-preparation lessons were uninspiring, unspiritual and tedious.

Lists, facts, names.

Things a Catholic must know in order to converse fluently with God.

When to look up, look down, stand up, kneel, quietly kick-up the kneeling-thing so people could pass through the aisle.

Specifically, our lesson that particular day, the day I wore the red pants, was The Seven Deadly Sins.

We were young, naïve, and words like sloth and lust were pretty much lost on us, so the teacher – an overweight, undercreative woman who seemed lacking in both the temperament and inspiration to teach – decided to use examples for each of the sins.

When she got to gluttony, she wiped her brow, which usually beaded up with the exertion of standing and pacing in front of us, yelling at us to sit still, hands on our laps, eyes forward.

I remember the moment before she locked eyes with me, then announced GLUTTONY is the sin that I’m guilty of, apparently (she gestured toward her large, lumpy body) and Melissa is guilty of, too.

12 pairs of pre-teen eyes whipped around my way, and a piece of me broke off.

That day signaled the first shots of the Civil War that I would wage against my body for 25 years.

I have looked for rest, respite, an armistice, but have only found temporary havens.

It has been a war that has engulfed me, stolen my happiness, and left me so completely ashamed that I couldn’t bear to ask for help.

This past weekend, by a lake in a secluded camp, a friend sat back and admired the sunset.

She told me a story about a man who walked around for a long time in a suit that didn’t fit him, just because he thought it would be the only suit he’d ever have.

He was afraid if he took it off, he would have nothing.

I know that feeling.

I’ve been long afraid that if I put down the guns, cannons and bombs that volley around in my head and heart I would not recognize the terrain of my spirit.

Because of that, I’ve spent little time praying, facing a cross, feet flat on the floor, skirt knee-length-or-longer, chanting.

At the lake, after my friend told me the story, I decided to throw my suit into the lake, along with my idea of a God who gives pop-quizzes and multiple choice tests.

I will talk to God, but not with lists and chants.

I will pray with bad posture, pen in my hand, laughing the whole
time.

Last Minute Karma $20 Secret Elves Project

The universe has sent us the opportunity to help a few families who are facing hard times.

Four students may sign up to bring a gift/giftcard for each of the names listed below.  I will pass around a signup sheet in class today and both classes Friday. The prize for this act of good citizenship and generosity is $20.  Please make the presentation nice and include some sort of card or note*

I'd like to request that students who are earning $100 for publishing a book please step back and allow other students this opportunity.

Of course, if you'd like to give a gift and NOT earn $20, I'm fine with that, and so is the universe (I asked). Anyone in the community who feels moved to join us is welcome to add to the pile of gifts.

End of the Semester Game Show

It is the end of the semester and my life has become a game show. Everywhere I turn, questions questions questions and people asking for money and trying to GIVE me money.

Before class the other day one student raised her hand and when I called on her she furrowed her brows and said she forgot.

I moved on and answered questions about this, that, the other and then something else.

She raises her hand again. I call on her again.

She furrows her brow. She forgot the question again.

More students ask this that and the other.

Class hasn't started, so the ones who just walked in are asking questions I've already answered.

No big deal. I keep answering, trying to win this quiz bowl.

She raises her hand again. I call on her again.

She furrows her brow then points at me and asks, "How did you get your jeans over your cast?"

I give her a satisfactory answer and she looks relieved.

We laugh, I call an end to the questions, and throw my class into the 1950s for an hour.

More Q & A from students

Question: With all respect Dr. Soldani, please stop driving me nuts. I check my grades ten times a day and you still haven't fixed my grade from X and you owe me $ from Y.
Answer: I know. I know. I do all my grade fixing in one sitting. Print out your grades and hand them in on the last day of class (AMH 1041: Thursday & AMH 2020: Friday)-- indicate what changes I still owe you. Have faith in me to get your grades right, OK?

Question: When is the publishing deadline for students who are publishing the book and asking to get a take-home exam?
Answer: 1pm on Friday,
Question: When is it due for everyone else?
Answer: 11:59pm, this Friday night, on Blackboard
Question: Why do I have to put my bank account info to create a CreateSpace account?
Answer: You don't. That's for direct deposit. I have them send me checks. I like checks. Send me checks any day. Anyyyyyyy day. OK, back to questions.

Question: Can students put money towards the 100 point project?
Answer: Yes. $100 is 100 points

Question: Will everyone who writes a book earn 100 points on the 100 point project?
Answer: Definitely not.  I will grade all projects on the quality of the research and story.  I'm proud of those of you who have the courage to put your work out there, but please know that not all  published projects will earn A's.

Question: Can I put class money towards Exam #1 or Exam #2?
Answer:  That window has closed. Money can be put towards an Exam on Exam Day ONLY. Students who are unhappy with their grades for Exam 1 or Exam 2 may take the makeup exam and attempt to bring their grade up.

Question: Can students buy out of Exam #3?
Answer: No. Only students who publish a book and have a 75% in the class can ask for the take-home version of the exam.  The take-home exam will be due online through safeassign by 11:59 Wednesday December.

Question: How can I buy out of past quizzes?
Answer: Turn in the money at Exam #3 along with a nice letter to me explaining on how you'd like your money-points distributed.

FAQ: 100 Point Project - Fall 2014

This is so much faster than answering each question by email. Here we go.

Q) When is the project due?
A) Midnight on Friday, online through Blackboard link UNLESS you are publishing a book and writing a take-home exam, in which case I need to see you completed published book in class on Friday before I give you the take home.

Q) How long should the project be?
A) This is 10% of your grade and should show independent thought and the ability to explain US history and tie it to smaller stories. The best stories will probably be in the 2000 word range, but I am looking for QUALITY not just wordcount.

Q) Do we need sources?
A) Yes, at least 4 primary sources

Q) Can I write about my childhood?
A) Your story has to fit into a course on American History, it isn't just an essay. If you write about yourself or recent history you might present the same quality of research as other students and this would impact your grade.
